In his solo exhibition, “Free Transform”, Chris Georges (b. 1984), presents a selection of recent drawings, sculpture, and “Cig Figs,” drawings made on unfolded cigarette cartons to resemble action figures. Continuing his explorations of portraiture, and the peculiarities of the human form, Georges’ subjects exist at the nexus between adorability and grotesqueness, exuding an uneasy, ‘bulldog-cute’ charm. Rendered in a cartoonish style suggestive of vintage underground comics and Japanese Heta-Uma, many of the newer works find Georges beginning to employ looser, gestural brush strokes and paint-pours in complement to the moredetailed, attentive linework. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Chris Georges lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
